About Us

welcome to the king's Head

Established in 1679 as a coaching inn, The King's Head in Chipping Ongar is the oldest brick-fronted building on Chipping Ongar High Street. Named after King James II, who is believed to have stayed here during his reign, this Grade II listed building is home to a traditional lounge area with open fire, comfortable bar, function room, and a 100-seat restaurant, complete with full-length open kitchen.

Open every day we serve a seasonal, Mediterranean-inspired menu in our contemporary double-height dining room and decked outdoor terrace; weather permitting. From our Josper-grilled meat, fish and vegetables, to our homemade desserts, we place great emphasis on the provenance and quality of our food.

We use British meat and poultry, free-range eggs, and sustainable fish to create home comforts like our slow-cooked brisket cottage pie, as well as our traditional Neapolitan pizza, freshly prepared by one of our trained pizzaiolos, and cooked in our wood-fired oven.

With exposed brickwork and wood panelling, our comfortable bar area offers an extensive and varied drinks menu of carefully selected wines and spirits, Rainforest Alliance certified coffee, teas, and local beer supplied by Brentwood Brewery. We proudly sponsor our local Ongar Rugby Club, and for a more intimate dining experience, our fully restored function room is available to suit any special occasion or business event.

What Our Guests Say

the oakman inns family

Oakman Inns & Restaurants was founded in 2005. Our vision was to create an environment where like-minded people could come and enjoy some great food and drinks whilst catching up with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues.

We quickly won a place in the hearts and minds of local people through our support of local sports teams and community events. Then we started winning awards too. Today we work hard to replicate this recipe in each and every new pub that we open.
